Day 23 – The American Identity (blackout poem)

By on July 7, 2017

people fashion identities
for themselves
as old as America

the color line
bent and broke
in many directions

in law
the status of families
depended on affirming
their whiteness

parse slavery freedom and race
akin to the color of water
of how the invisible boundaries
have been raising children for centuries

when asked if she was white
her answer was
Iā€™m getting murkier
