Day 23 – The American Identity (blackout poem)

By on July 7, 2017

people fashion identities
for themselves
as old as America

the color line
bent and broke
in many directions

in law
the status of families
depended on affirming
their whiteness

parse slavery freedom and race
akin to the color of water
of how the invisible boundaries
have been raising children for centuries

when asked if she was white
her answer was
I’m getting murkier

Day 22 – Action Figure Power Girl (blackout poem)

By on June 29, 2017

Studies show
girls’ ambitions
can be heavily influenced
by their playthings.

Search for female
figures athletic
and empowering,
find hypersexualized
figures for
adult male collectors.

The idea
that girls could
save the world –
that’s very powerful
fantasy.

Day 21 – When A Writer Dies Young (blackout poem)

By on June 28, 2017

when a writer dies young
we mourn the work
that will never be
his masterpiece
a feat of fiction
gleaned from
an enormous talent
and countless chances

Day 20 – Love is a Standardized Test (for Jonathan and Elizabeth on their wedding day)

By on June 11, 2017

Love is a test we study for our entire lives
and hope we never have to take.
Because if we fail, it means we were
never prepared for it in the first place.

We emerge from the warmth
of the first woman who ever loved us,
screaming…

Day 19 – A Hyperconsciousness of Dividing Lines (blackout poem)

By on June 10, 2017

you can safely bet that
the government won’t
admit the problem
for a long history
of friction is
burdened by
a hyperconsciousness
of dividing lines
the seam between
north and south
a question of
whether a man’s human
rights evaporated when
he crossed the border

the shooting and
the violence that
followed happened
on one of those borders
this…

Day 18 – In the sordid forest of worship

By on June 9, 2017

in the sordid forest of worship

we smear our skin with dirt
to devour the darkness

our blood pounds like poison milk
frantic for a ghost to show
and one wet kiss away from morning

we melt screams like wax
and chant in the smoke
of a thousand tongues
beaten raw…

Day 17 – Build Love Like Muscle

By on June 8, 2017

we build love like muscle –
slow, steady, and with ever-increasing strength

it’s the repetition of us:

the breaking of bread
and the homemaking of a meal,
the tired tongue lifting to talk once more
for the sake of understanding

my kisses on your forehead,
your face buried in my…

Day 16 – Celebrity Itself Is A Drug (Blackout Poem)

By on June 1, 2017

Celebrity itself is a drug,
addiction the price of fame.

It’s good for business to say
that they get you high.

They expect you to be crazy.
The id is always
Glaargarg – you wanna do thaaaat.
But I…

Day 15 – We Came to Admire Your Beautiful Death

By on May 31, 2017

We drive through the woods and point
at shriveling bodies hanging from branches.

It’s the turn of the trees,
the red of their leaves,
their fall and return to the earth
that remind us of how much
we were ever truly worth.

They’re brown now,
from months of…
