An Exquisite Corpse 30 Days in the Hole

By on May 3, 2014

[Below is a poem I’ve puzzle-pieced together using my single best line/stanza from each and every one of my 30/30 poems composed this year. I like to think of it as a combination of two, popular poetic forms – the…

I like lists, and thus, I have decided to number out my top 6 most popular poems that now exist as a result of this year’s 30/30 Poetry Challenge. If you have a different favorite, feel that WordPress’ numbers are just off, or think another poem should’ve gotten more exposure,…

Day 30 – When Poems Bite Back (For Granny, and Everyone Else I Write About)

By on April 30, 2014

I

I always knew this day would come.
I just didn’t think it would be so soon,
or from such an objector.
But I guess no one likes to have their truth
chewed up and spat back at them.

II

My granny called me late last…

Day 29 – Things Tonika Taught Me

By on April 29, 2014

I

The proper way to eat an apple –
hollow out a ring around the center,
then attack the top and bottom remnants.

The true meaning of the phrase
“you’re welcome” – as in
“you’re welcome to hold me like that whenever you need to.”

The magic and…

Day 28 – No poetry came for me today

By on April 28, 2014

No poetry came for me today,
brought no bottom-dollar bail to break the bonds,
left me to rot behind the bars of spreadsheet cells.

She hadn’t shown in form-fitting clothes
as something for me to lust after,
no shifting curves for me to replay…

Day 27 – America, This Is How I Defend You

By on April 27, 2014

I have talked for a hundred hours
about your politics, economic policies, and people
over my past three months abroad.

I think I have spent more time discussing you
while away from you
than when you were beneath my feet.

I have heard different perspectives
as numerous…

    • Also, the other thing I did last weekend: performed in this super fun #improv show! Thanks to @stillsarahackerman and @laughingmatterscomedy for letting me play with y’all in #BattleActs, and for the homies for coming out to support. (Lenise is still a beast, even though she lost the crown.)
    • This past weekend, I had the super cool opportunity to lead 2 panels at a legit #writers conference right here in #Atlanta. Thank you to @broadleafwriters, @zacharysteele23, and @rileymccarthy76 for trusting me to ask some good questions and to keep a room full of writers engaged. I learned a lot and got to spend some quality time with some quality friends - both new and old. Looking forward to next year already. #bwc19, #writing
    • So it’s 3am over in Split, #Croatia - the land of my #family, of my people - and as I lay here, restless, I can’t help but think about the passing of yet another anniversary of #HurricaneKatrina and it’s devastation to my #NewOrleans #home, another land full of my family and people. // Earlier today, on vacation, as we toured together the ancient palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, our wonderful tour guide pointed out the different eras and styles of construction that showed their faces throughout, and how the people of the city have always used it as a living structure. Despite political and actual wars, changes in faith and leaders, and thousands of years of time, the structure still stands and lives, and the people keep adapting and living right along with it. // I’ll post more pictures later, but for now, I’m too busy enjoying these rare moments with loved ones both near and far to let the sadness of loss long ago seep in. Maybe this is healing. Maybe this is adapting. Maybe this is living. And, man, ain’t that somethin.
    • Guess who just moved on down to #Atlanta, y'all?! #Vandy, #Fraaands, #ReuniteTheAdmiralsClub, #GonnaWinAllTheTriviaNightsNow, #MetaNashvilleFilter
    • The top 10 of my trip to visit some of my top friends this past weekend. #NYC, #StatueOfLiberty, #EmoNight, #ConeyIsland, #Nonnas, #BookOfMormon
    • Recent fun times at the @dadsgarageatl student mixer nights. 😁 #practice, #improv, #Atlanta
